About North Melbourne

A cosmopolitan neighbourhood on the northern fringe of the city

Situated on the northern fringe of the CBD, North Melbourne has flourished into a dynamic, cosmopolitan enclave, being a popular residential area due to its proximity to Melbourne’s city centre. Its residences are a mix of established and new housing with commercial, industrial, retail and community facilities scattered throughout.

A number of retail precincts exist in North Melbourne, with the largest being centred around the southern end of Errol Street. A multitude of excellent cafes and restaurants line this popular tram route. The former North Melbourne Town Hall with its stunning clock tower dominates Errol Street and is now used as an arts house, offering stage performances and function rooms. You'll also find the Comic's Lounge; Melbourne's biggest and best comedy club.

North Melbourne’s working class history is alive and well in its charming workers’ cottages, many of which have now been renovated to embrace contemporary living, and its glorious Victorian terraces. As the area continues to gentrify, new apartment complexes and warehouse conversions are becoming much more common.

North Melbourne is perfect for living an independent lifestyle, and young professionals have really taken to the area’s vibe and location, although it’s not the exclusive realm of the young – you’ll find neighbours of all ages enjoying their inner-city lifestyle.
